Conor P. McLaughlin, PhD

“Leadership, not leaders” has become a personal and professional mantra across my career. It centers my work and my thinking on leadership toward the ways everyone puts what they believe leadership is into practice; it is the what we do, rather than role we hold or the power we wield. Because of this belief I don’t use the word “leader” to talk about myself or about others. I work with people and organizations to make sure everyone, as well as the the group as a unit, can put their potential for leadership into practice.

I am a life-long learner and educator, leadership scholar, and award-winning facilitator on equity and social justice in higher education workplaces. I’m also a partner, a son, a California transplant from Philadelphia, and a friend.

I have worked in higher education for 20 years across staff, faculty, and administrative roles. I have also sold shoes, washed dishes, pumped gas, sold art, built custom frames, sold records, and staffed a customer service call center. Throughout my career I have come to realized that leadership has been the constant passion and curiosity across my work and what continues to excite me about the work ahead.

I have delivered hundreds of keynotes, workshops, class lectures, training sessions, and retreats for staff, faculty, and students at universities and organizations across North America and Europe. I regularly speak about practicing leadership on teams and while navigating hectic moments, being an effective and equity-minded supervisor, and how everyone can contribute to a culture of belonging in their workplaces.

I’m also passionate about coffee, music, and cooking as creative outlets and conduits for community building.
